Our Ethos
What We Stand For
Learning by Hart exists as a quiet space in a noisy digital world. We believe that words matter, that ideas have weight, and that the reading experience itself should feel like a gift—not an assault of pop-ups, tracking pixels, and algorithms designed to keep you scrolling.
Human Words, Human Experience
Every article you read here comes from lived experience. These aren’t theories we’ve researched or trends we’re capitalising on. They’re reflections from our journey as a family who chose to step off the conventional path and into something more intentional.
We found ourselves on this path because of circumstances in life that led us to look for a different way of living. It is not the direction we ever imagined our life taking, but never before has a decision felt so right. Removing our children from school has forced us to re-evaluate every area of our lives, to shake ourselves free from how society expects us to live, and to design a life that is right for us.
Deep Experience In Healthcare
Vikki’s background in healthcare, and her methodical and determined approach to healing her own chronic illness, has shaped the way she views the world and the way we approach education with the kids. We strongly believe that the best thing we can do to give our children the best start in life is to encourage the right behaviours and attributes, encourage healthy choices and curiosity about the world we live in. Through self-exploration from an early age, and effective role modelling from us, we believe they can learn about themselves, their unique, innate skills and what motivates them, so they may go into the world and use this knowledge to the benefit of everybody.
Authenticity First
We write about what we’ve actually done, the mistakes we’ve made, and what we’ve learnt in the process. There’s no AI-generated writing here, no outsourced content, no recycled top 10 lists. Just honest observations from humans trying to work out what matters most.
A disclaimer of sorts…. We are not trained teachers. Nor are we child psychologists. We are just parents being parents, like any other, learning as much as we can as we go along. We accept everyone has different viewpoints, opportunities and values and indeed our lifestyle may not be suitable or available to everyone. We share our own experiences & beliefs, so our journal is not intended as professional guidance. Nonetheless, everyone is welcome here and we hope that our lived experience brings something positive to your life, even if it’s not our lifestyle itself.
Your Privacy Is Sacred
We don’t track you. We don’t collect your data. We don’t sell your information or serve you targeted ads based on your reading habits. We maintain minimal, privacy-first analytics purely to understand that people are visiting and what our readers find most valuable—nothing more. There are no cookies following you around the internet, no invasive analytics measuring your every click. When you’re here, you’re simply here—reading, thinking, perhaps reflecting. That’s all we want this space to be.
Beauty in the Details
We believe a beautiful reading experience matters. The typography, the spacing, the way an image sits alongside text—these aren’t superficial choices. They’re a form of respect for your time and attention. In an age where most websites are designed to distract and monetise, we’ve built something designed simply to be read. Generous margins. Thoughtful layouts. Images that breathe. Words given the space they need to resonate.
Independent and Reader-Supported
This site exists because readers like you choose to support it. We don’t rely on advertising revenue, which means we’re not beholden to algorithms, click-through rates, or engagement metrics. We can write what feels true and important, not what’s trending or controversial. If you find value in what we create, we invite you to contribute what feels right to you. If you can’t, that’s absolutely fine too—these words are here for anyone who needs them.
Slow Media for a Fast World
We have a limited presence on social media by design, favouring LinkedIn for professional connection, with only a cursory presence on social platforms so people in those spheres can identify us when they go looking. We don’t post daily, chase viral moments, or measure success in followers. This is intentional. We worry deeply about the physical, mental health and productivity impact of social media.
Lifelong Learning
Education is a process of lifelong learning, not something we’re forced to do in school and leave behind at 18 years old. If we can embrace this idea, that a growth mindset is a vital component in a well-lived life, we can change the world for the better. We believe in creating work that lasts longer than a news cycle, that deepens rather than inflames, that invites reflection rather than reaction. Our articles might take weeks to write. They’re meant to be read slowly, perhaps returned to, maybe even disagreed with. That’s the kind of relationship we want to build with you.
Connection Over Scale
We’re not trying to reach millions. We’re trying to reach the people for whom this work genuinely resonates. We feel extremely passionate about this way of life and the benefits it can give to a whole family. We are driven to share our experiences with others to help and encourage anyone trying to face similar challenges themselves. By creating a community together, we can collectively look to drive change.
We value depth of connection over breadth of audience. If what we write speaks to you, if it helps you think differently about your own path, if it makes you feel less alone in your choices—that’s success. Every email we receive, every thoughtful comment and every conversation sparked by something we’ve written reminds us why we do this work.
The Invitation
For too long have we relied on outdated models and practices to shape and mould our children, contributing to growing mental health challenges and a disengaged young workforce. We aim to provide reflections from an alternative viewpoint, to make you as our reader stop and think.
This is a space for thinkers, questioners, and people willing to live differently. We hope you’ll stay awhile, read deeply, and perhaps find something here that helps you live more aligned with what truly matters to you.
